Millions felt it...
A few turned towards it...
One man believes he knows the source of...the Rapture.

On a bright spring day in 2015 an event occurs. Millions of people around the world feel that something positive has happened. Some report noticing a certain smell, or taste, a sound, etc. Then a few claim they know what direction it originated from. Religious people believe it's the start of the ‘Rapture’, while scientists say it's a natural event.
Governments become concerned. The media search for answers. The whole world is captivated by this mysterious event.
In a small village in the south-west of England, Jack Clarke also felt the Rapture. He felt the positive mood and strange sensations, but he also felt something else - something only he experienced. He felt connected with someone. Someone who can answer the question what was the Rapture?

Lavender Hill is a novella (about 110 pages on a kindle)

Lavender Hill A Novella edition by PJ Garland Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

An interesting little book that held my attention throughout. A strange phenomenon, some sort of group hysteria (known as the 'rapture') has spread across the world, with millions of people reporting ecstatic experiences. The origin is unclear but seems connected somehow with a place called Lavender Hill in south west England. Governments begin to panic at the resulting social upheavals and in Britain, M15 is put on the case to try to find out what is going on...is there a scientific explanation or is it really some sort of religious re-awakening?

Mr Garland is a neuroscientist and has started an intelligent and interesting story about whether it is possible to have a 'theory of everything' which explains all of the human experience; a very good idea for a book. Mr Garland's writing style reminds me a little of James Herbert and the plot reminded me a little of 'Quatermass IV'. It's not 'great literature' and has some slightly clunky moments (the love life of the lead character seems very formulaic, for example) but overall the style is competent.

I am only giving this book three stars however because it doesn't have a proper ending. It's basically a long teaser and at the end the author says he will only write more if there is sufficient interest. I don't really mind about that because the book was free, but I would be a bit annoyed if I had paid for a book that ended like that as I would feel short changed. There are also indications towards the end that the story is going to go down more of a conventional sci-fi route, which would be a shame, but I won't know that unless another part gets written.

H. Morrison (author of 'All Exclusive' and 'The Dalai Lama Next Door.')
But such a very bad book. I got about 80 percent through and couldn't even work up enough interest to skim through to see how it ended. Could maybe have been a good 5 page short.
I was intrigued with Lavendar Hill but disappointed to find that it is not at all a complete story and ends somewhat abruptly. I found the writing and character development to be good, especially for a novella, but was very disappointed when I came to the end and nothing at all was resolved.
The description for this novella sounded very promising, but the story itself just didn't stand up to expectations. The first few pages caught my interest, with the description of a mysterious occurance and odd reaction from those effected by it. But then a few chapters later you realize that this event was meant to be the "Rapture", and this "Rapture" is not at all what most of the readers would expect it to be. And, this is where the author started to lose me.

I'm all for poetic license, so to speak, but if an author is going to choose a well known concept to describe an event, then they should at least stick to general premise of that concept. This author's Rapture was an event that left those it touched alive, well, and with general feelings of happiness. In other words, the Rapture was based on the textbook definition of the word, not the religious concept. Hence, why the Book Description seemed misleading to me.

To be honest, I did not finish the novella, either (like another reviewer said). I read about 75% of it, and called it quits. If it had just been my conflicting expectation of the Rapture, I would have kept reading. But the story was getting bogged down and moving slowly, the characters weren't terribly likable, and there were so many of them it was hard to remember who was who. I just didn't enjoy reading the story itself. Sorry, but I can't recommend this one.
I sincerely hope PJ Garland writes a sequel to Lavender Hill. The characters and events hold your interest and keep you wondering what's going to happen next. Thankfully, it's a fun sci/fi-fantasy novel and stays away from sophomoric drivel. It's well worth the read!
